For our biology project, we were required to conduct two different experiments to help determine how healthy a certain aspect of our environment is/was (our environment being where we live). for our experiments, we chose to do an air pollution test and a soil acidity test. As a summary of these, we made a health report to compile all the information gathered into write ups and graphs
Abstract for health report:
For our first experiment, we tested the air quality outside and inside three different locations (each house of each group member) by hanging up pieces of plastic cut out from a milk carton covered in vaseline in an attempt to catch the different particles floating around in the air we breathe as a way to gauge how polluted the air is. Whereas for our second, we did a soil acidity test to see whether our soil was acidic, alkaline or neutral. We did this by mixing soil from 3 different parts of our yard, and then combining them into a mixture of either water, baking soda, and the soil, or vinegar and soil.
In conclusion, the experiments were done with relatively low casualties, they were done as instructed, using the right materials, although were in less than preferable conditions, with the placement of some of the tests being in less-practical conditions to gather an accurate result than others. The results, however, seemed to vary in accuracy in some areas. For example, the plants in my backyard ar covered in black dust and soot, but my test from outside was less yellow than the one from national city, which I find odd. As for the acidity tests, the results were as expected, low acidity and/or neutral soil in the majority of the results. What caused the acidity, I was not able to tell with this kind of test.
